Play chess online with your friends or play the computer
In this area, you can play online chess easily and free of charge as a guest. Set up a new game with your own mode and challenge other players to a game, or accept a match offer from the available list. One way to challenge a friend is to hover over 'play' in the left menu, and click 'live chess'
Then, in the right hand menu, click on 'play a friend'
From here you will be able to choose the type of game, and the friend you want to challenge.
Click 'change' to choose the type of game you want to play. Then pick a friend from your list of friends. You can also choose from a list of people you played recently.
You can tell if your friends are online or not by the green or orange square in the lower right of their avatar.
Green means they are online!
Orange means they are online, but already playing a game!
If your friend does not have a green square, they may not be able to accept your request for a Live match.
If you are sending a request for a Daily game, it doesn't matter whether your opponent is online, offline, or in a game. The request will wait for them to accept it.

Another way you can challenge a friend is by simply going to their profile, and clicking on the challenge icon:

One last way you can challenge your friend is by using a shortcut url:chess.com/play/USERNAME

Replace 'username' with the username of the member you want to challenge, then put the url in your address bar, and it will take you directly to a challenge to that member!
